Stevia plant is a small, sweet-leaf herb of South American origin from the same plant family as sunflowers. Recent scientific trials firmly establish that stevia is more than a sweetener, it has many health benefiting compounds that help control blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure, and pH level because it is naturally very alkaline.

Stevia is a very, very sweet!

The raw leaves of the stevia plant are approximately 40 times sweeter than sugar, and the powdered sweetener “extracts” derived from them is up to 200-300 times sweeter. What this means, is that just a tiny bit of stevia will suffice to replace sugar in recipes. Approved as a sweetener in Japan since the 1970’s, stevia is the number one sweetener there, with a market share of over 40% without any of the unwanted side effects associated with aspartame (an artificial sweetener).

French fries have a GI of 95. Tabletop sugar has a GI of 80. Stevia has a GI of 0. It’s a leaf, not a fruit or carbohydrate, so it simply has a sweet taste, but not because of its sugar content. Nowadays, South American doctors even officially prescribe medicine containing stevia to help control high blood pressure. Stevia helps with Candida

Candida albicans is a natural type of yeast that’s present in every human’s intestines. But in some people, this yeast population can grow excessively large and that’s when an infection called “candidiasis” occurs, causing symptoms like diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. The main culprit with candidiasis is the fermentation of sugar in the intestine, and therefore many candida diets are based on eliminating sucrose from a person’s eating patterns. Raw stevia cannot be fermented by candida albicans and does not promote candidiasis, so it should be perfectly safe to substitute sugar with stevia for people with this condition.

We have specifically made the effort to source pure 100% dried stevia leaves, ground to a powder, with no cheap filler ingredients added. You may be surprised by reading the back of commercially available brand packaging containing; dextrose, inulin, erythritol or maltodextrin and finally a little stevia leaf extract. For a start, dextrose is another word for glucose, which is sugar. Maltodextrin is powdered starches like potato, corn, wheat and rice. Erythritol is a sugar alcohol with no calorific value, while inulin is a sweet plant-derived fiber, suitable for diabetics, but my concern is all these ingredients add up to more cheap filler and less raw stevia leaves. If you see cellulose, that’s fine wood pulp plant fiber powder. Mmmmm.. yummy wood pulp. Believe it or not some brands contain lactose; sugar from cows milk which dairy-free lactose-intolerant people are making great efforts to avoid! Aspartame is the most dangerous, this artificial non-saccharide sweetener has serious health risks. This sweet-tasting poison should be avoided at all costs. The final concern I have with “stevia brands” is somehow companies turn their product white to imitate sugar?! I’m not sure what the process is to turn green leaves white, but my intuition tells me it can’t be as natural as grinding green leaves to a fine green powder, adding nothing. 

Sweet advice before you buy

If it’s your first time buying pure green leaf stevia powder, please begin by purchasing a small amount like 250g as a test to first see if you like it. I’ve known people to enthusiastically buy 1KG, break open the seal, mix a single teaspoon in their tea or coffee and get a sweet green sludge surprise! Then ask to return the 1KG (with 1 teaspoon missing) for a full refund because it wasn’t what they expected. This is raw leaf, it doesn’t dissolve like sugar in water, stevia leaves are not soluble! Use trial and error to adapt your teaspoon size to the sweetness of stevia leaf, which is 30x – 40x sweeter than sugar. We cannot give refunds for returns after any package has been opened, it cannot be resold.
