Ginger’s cousin! Turmeric is the spice that gives curry its yellow-orange colour… and will stain everything else it touches to a yellow-orange colour too! So be careful! For thousands of years, it has been used in India both as a spice and medicinal herb. The primary active component of turmeric  is called curcumin which gives it the characteristic dark yellow orange colour. Curcumin is an anti-inflammatory natural antioxidant which helps protect you against heart diseases, prevent certain types of cancer, ease symptoms of osteoarthritis, prevent diabetes, and many more benefits listed below.

Boost Serotonin and Dopamine

Dopamine and Serotonin play an important role in sleep, memory, metabolism, and emotions. Both of these neurotransmitters are vital to mental health. Curcumin has antidepressant properties derived from its influence on serotonin and dopamine; affecting several biochemical pathways associated with major depression, such as oxidative stress pathways and immune-inflammatory activity.

Heal your Gut

Try adding turmeric in a gut-soothing carrot soup. Turmeric’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties support a healthy digestive system. Ayurvedic medicine uses it to treat digestive disorders. Reducing inflammation heals leaky gut and supports the elimination of free radicals from the body, preventing tissue injury in the digestive tract.

Help with Arthritis

Arthritis is an inflammatory condition of the joints. Researchers found curcumin is sometimes more effective than anti-inflammatory drugs at treating the symptoms of arthritis. People with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis may find curcumin a safe and effective treatment option because of its powerful anti-inflammatory properties. During a previous study, candidates with arthritis who took a 1,000 mg curcumin tablet daily were able to improve their physical functioning significantly after eight months. Curcumin eases excessive activity soreness in athletes. I use ginger and turmeric religiously as part of my “superfood medicines” morning routine, especially while ultra-running 1000’s of miles around the world.

Turmeric Serving Suggestions

Add it to your cheesy vegan scrambled “egg” tofu and roasted veggies (with nutritional yeast). Add turmeric to rice and soups. Blend into smoothies. Make turmeric tea! There are so many ways to incorporate turmeric into your recipes, but this doesn’t guarantee a daily medicinal dose. Personally I prefer to ensure its daily consumption by making it part of my morning routine. If I add turmeric to a banana smoothie I’m more likely to ruin my smoothie, which is why I separate my medicines from my meals. I’d rather chug down a “shot” of medicinal superfood supplements mixed together with citrus and/or apple cider vinegar and a little water. It doesn’t taste good, so don’t expect it to! This is medicine. Once a day chugging the witches brew down is a minor discomfort lasting less than one minute per 24 hours.

Daily Dose

One teaspoon per serving, at least once a day. Increase to morning and evening if possible. If you really wish to boost results or decrease athletic soreness, ramp up to three times per day. This is why I suggest mixing it with citrus or apple cider vinegar and creating a routine around these drinks. Adding to the odd rice and tofu-scramble won’t cut it.

Pro Tip: Add a pinch of black pepper to your daily Turmeric to increase absorption considerably. 20mg of black pepper with 2g of Turmeric has been shown to increase curcumin absorption by 2000%. For convenience, I suggest you habitually premix these ingredients immediately after your purchase, give the bag a shake, and it’s done, and never forgotten when you take your daily medicines. Stop paying silly money for tiny capsule supplements of the same powder, when you could buy Organic KG’s supply here and mix it yourself!

Be Aware

Don’t overdo it, while turmeric and curcumin are generally safe to consume, too much of any good thing can be dangerous. Taking high amounts of turmeric might prevent absorption of iron. Turmeric should be used with caution in people with iron deficiency. There is some concern that turmeric can damage the liver, especially in people who have liver disease. Don’t use turmeric if you have liver problems. Signs and symptoms of too much turmeric; upset stomach, acid reflux, diarrhoea, dizziness and headaches. Used wisely you’ll ease athletic muscle soreness and arthritis pains, protect your brain, and improve your mood.
